The stars were lining the sky and the film screen on March 29, 2019. H.E.R Collective in partnership with SO Studios Africa hosted our first short film festival. The atmosphere couldn’t have been better; Movies under the stars.
16 Films, directors, good food and drinks! Who could ask for anything more? This opening night screening gave up and coming African film makers a platform to showcase their work. The skill level of the directors ranged from first timers to seasoned independent film festival winners. This night highlighted the best of what Africans offer. Instead of waiting for Hollywood to tell the narrative of the African these filmmakers have taken the bull by the horns and have created work that represents the New African mentality. The following films were selected to be screened during the festival:
Gloria Adotevi – Xoese
Amartei Armar- Vagabonds
Evan Eghan – Akom
Masedi Rayanne – Light
Togbe Gavua – Sophie
Curtis Essel – Agya
Helel Smith – Bottomless
Sane – Evans Kweggir
Kenneth Kihire – How it feels to be a virgin
Comfort Arthur – Black Barbie
Nii Afotey Odai – Earth IPromise
Tiffany Ampene – Blind or Not
Circle of life – kofi Kyei
Who caused it – Dorcas Fumey
The Breakfast – Richard Ofoe
Annual men’s conference – Ofenstse mwase
The night began with networking time. Directors, film lovers and guests were able to get a drink, enjoy the scenery and get to know each other. We then followed up with a warm welcome from Sabukie of SO Studios and Nzali Elela of H.E.R Collective. The organizers wasted no time getting the films rolling. They started off the night with the film Xoese directed by Gloria Adotevi. One of our female directors! After the first few films three directors were called up to discuss the inspiration behind their films and some of the challenges they have faced as new film directors. Many of them spoke of funding issues as one of the biggest challenges. However, they all referenced the great amount of support in the form of talent coming to assist them.
Although there were a few technical issues the opening night was still an overwhelming success. The attendees all enjoyed the films, gave directors constructive feedback and even stayed a bit longer just to chat and continue the positive vibes. We look forward to the next film screening so stay tuned!
